MoSi2 Heating Element

MoSi2 heating elements(Molybdenum disilicide heating elements) are another type of high-temperature resistance heating element commonly used in furnaces and kilns. MoSi2 heating elements have properties that make them suitable for applications requiring high-temperature stability and resistance to oxidation.

Applications:

MoSi2 heating elements find applications in various industries and processes that require high-temperature environments. Their exceptional stability and resistance to oxidation make them suitable for a range of applications, particularly those involving high-temperature furnaces and kilns. Here are some common applications:

  • Metallurgical Industry: Heat Treatment
  • Ceramics Industry:Sintering
  • Glass Industry:Melting and Forming
  • Semiconductor Manufacturing:Annealing and Heat Treatment
  • Laboratory and Research:Materials Research
  • Heat Treatment and Forging
  • Aerospace Industry:Brazing and Heat Treatment
  • Powder Metallurgy: Sintering of Powders
  • Heating in Vacuum Environments:
  • Research and Development: High-Temperature Experiments
  • Energy and Environment: Thermal Processing

Physical & Chemical Properties

Density5.6–5.8 g/cm³
Bending Strength≥15 kg/mm²
Max Working Temperature1780°C
Surface Load5–15 W/cm²
Water Absorption≤0.2%
Thermal Elongation~4%

Oxidation Resistance:
At high temperatures, a dense quartz (SiO₂) layer forms on the surface, preventing further oxidation. If the temperature exceeds 1700°C, the SiO₂ layer melts (m.p. ≈1710°C), but reforms once cooled, maintaining protection.

Avoid prolonged use between 400–700°C, as severe low-temperature oxidation may cause element degradation.

MoSi₂ Heating Element Installation Guidelines

Because MoSi₂ elements are brittle at room temperature and ductile at high temperature, careful handling is required:

General Recommendations:

  • Always use vertical mounting for U-type elements. If horizontal mounting is needed, use high-temperature insulating supports.

  • The cone ends must extend into the furnace chamber.

  • Do not overtighten the power connectors initially. Tighten again when heated to avoid breakage.

  • Use matching ceramic spacers to separate the shanks.

Installation Steps:

  1. Remove the wooden block from between the shanks.

  2. Insert the element through the ceramic spacer into the mounting hole.

  3. Push the element in until it touches the wooden block inside the furnace.

  4. Fill any gaps with alumina fiber.

  5. Install the ceramic fixture, aligning all screws in one direction.

  6. Once all elements are in place, install the power tracks, ensuring they do not contact the fixture to prevent short circuits.

Note: MoSi₂ rods are fragile and should be handled with caution at all times.
